FTL Reference

Flight Time Limitations (FTL) are regulatory rules designed to prevent crew fatigue. They define maximum flight duty periods, minimum rest periods, and cumulative flight time limits.

EASA ORO.FTL Key Limits

ParameterLimit
Max FT in 7 days60 hours
Max FT in 28 days190 hours
Max FT in 365 days1,000 hours
Max FDP (2 sectors, acclimatized, 06:00–17:59)13:00 hrs
Min rest at home base12 hours
Min rest away from home base10 hours

FAA Part 117 Key Limits

ParameterLimit
Max FT in 672 hours (28 days)100 hours
Max FT in 365 days1,000 hours
Max FDP (2 segments, report 06:00–09:59)13:00 hrs
Min rest period10 hours
Min opportunity for sleep8 hours
WOCL: The Window of Circadian Low (02:00–05:59 local) reduces maximum FDP by 1 hour when the FDP encroaches on it. Augmented crews have extended limits with controlled rest provisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

An FDP is the period from when a crew member is required to report for duty until the aircraft is parked and engines are shut down at the end of the last sector. It includes all pre-flight duties, flight time, and post-flight duties.

The Window of Circadian Low (WOCL) is 02:00–05:59 local time, when human alertness is at its lowest. Under EASA ORO.FTL, if an FDP starts during or encroaches on the WOCL, the maximum permitted FDP is reduced.

Yes, under EASA ORO.FTL, an FDP may be extended by the commander in unforeseen circumstances by up to 2 hours (or 3 hours if the FDP does not encroach on the WOCL). The commander must notify the operator and the extension must be recorded.

Flight Time is measured from first movement (off-blocks) to final stop (on-blocks). Duty Time encompasses the entire FDP including pre-flight briefing, post-flight duties, and any positioning time.

Yes, EASA ORO.FTL applies to all commercial air transport operations, including cargo. Some provisions may differ for all-cargo operations, particularly regarding augmented crew and in-flight rest facilities.
